Know Before You Go
What to expect on your private trek
Welcome! To help you get the most out of your hike, here’s a quick look at how our treks work and what to bring. Our routes travel through rainforest, along crater rims, and across uneven terrain. Weather can change quickly from warm sun to wind and rain, and volcanic emissions can affect air quality. Please review the essentials below before you book so your experience is safe, comfortable, and unforgettable.
-
Terrain & fitness: Plan for 3–4 miles on uneven, sometimes steep trails. Closed-toe shoes are required; hiking shoes or boots are best.
-
Weather: Tours run rain or shine. Pack a light rain jacket and layers—summit conditions can be cool, windy, or wet.
-
What to bring: Water, snacks, sunscreen, hat, and a small daypack.
-
Who can join: Children 5+ are welcome with a parent/guardian. Guests should be able to walk steadily over rugged ground.
-
Accessibility: Our Steam Vents & Crater Rim Hike can accommodate a wheelchair. Please contact Andy in advance so you can decide together if it’s a good fit.
-
Air quality: Volcanic emissions may impact sensitive individuals. If you have respiratory concerns, consult your doctor before joining.
-
What’s not included: Park entry fees, meals, and transportation—we meet at the trailhead (directions provided after booking).
-
Lava viewing: Amazing when it happens, but not guaranteed—eruptions are unpredictable.
-
Gratuities: Not included, always appreciated.
Don't forget to fill out your Acknowledgement of Risk form for each participant of the trek before your arrival.
